A conversation on music appreciation. Time: 10:30pm on a school night (bad mom). Place: the car, while going from gas station to gas station looking for cinnamon bears to smuggle into Jon in his hospital room.

Me: Let’s get some music on.

Jachin: I hate all music. Unless it doesn’t have words.

Me: Are you kidding?

Jachin: No. Words are dumb.

Me: …

*Epic music starts*

Jachin: This isn’t bad…

*words start*
*A modern-day warrior, mean, mean stride…*

Jachin: Augh! Words! Nevermind, this stinks.

Zoe: Is this Lady Gaga?

Me: … What?

Zoe, repeating slower because she thinks her mother is slow in the head: Is this Lady Gaga?

Me: Uhhhh, no. This is a guy.

Zoe: It’s a guy?

Jachin: Haha! You thought this was a girl!

Me, to Jachin: Do you know who this is?

Jachin, sheepishly: … No.

Me: *sigh* This is Rush, guys. The guy singing is Geddy Lee. And listen, Rush has arguably the best drummer ever.

*I decided not to into the whole Neil Peart versus Alex Van Halen thing, because, you know, one thing at a time.*

Jachin: Rush… Why does that sound familiar…?

Me, knowing where this is going: Because Rush also does YYZ.

Jachin: Oh, right! From Guitar Hero…

Me, trying not to cry over the fact that all of my firstborn’s knowledge comes from video games: Right.

Zoe, still seemingly confused: Wait, soooo… this isn’t Lady Gaga?

And then, mercifully, I pulled into Macey’s and ran into the bulk food section for cinnamon bears, distracting me from the fact that I’ve found yet another way I’ve kinda failed my children.

*sigh* Lady Gaga… Class dismissed.
