8:08 pmZoe’s Gold (Colored) Medal
There is no prouder moment for a mom than when your little girl is awarded her first gold medal in Utah Youth Soccer. This crowning moment happened for me this past Saturday. Little miss Zoe was awarded her gold soccer medallion on a thick, black ribbon. Her sweaty little face beamed as brightly as any weeping Olympic champion I’ve ever witnessed. Even after 45 tiring minutes on the field—her pink shin-guard clad legs pumping up and down the field—the adrenaline rush of her first medal fueled the skipping and “woo-hoo-ing” all the way to the car.
I should note here that I’m not entirely sure why she received this highly coveted gold medal. Actually, she and the other 9 players on the “Limes in the Coconuts” U6 team each received one. It’s mid-season. There haven’t been any playoff games. I’m pretty sure no one even keeps score at this point. I should also tell you that none of the players on my son Jachin’s team, the “Cougars”, received any such medal. This resulted in my son making obnoxious comments to my daughter as she skipped and woo-hoo-ed to the car. Cutting remarks like, “Wow, big deal” and “who cares?” Remarks that I’m pretty she couldn’t hear over her own woo-hoo-ing. Rumor has it that my son will also be receiving one of these prestigious awards this coming Saturday, in which case I’m looking forward to him doing a little woo-hoo-ing of his own.
When we got home from the game, Zoe stood in front of our full length mirror, admiring the medal hanging around her neck. “Mom,” she said, stoking the gold emblem, “I think I know why they call it a gold medal.” “Why?” I asked. “Because,” she said, “ it’s gold colored, and it’s metal. So it’s gold metal.”
Gold medal, gold-colored metal… what’s the difference? They’re superstars, and they’ve got shiny things around their necks to prove it!

[…] your funniest post! I’m addicted to this contest. This time around I’m entering my “Zoe’s Gold (Colored) Medal” post, since my old school friend, Kerri, just read it and commented me how much she liked it. […]
